affaele Quattrone (Foggia, 1974) is a sociologist and contemporary art curator living and working in Bologna (Italy). He is President of the regional department of the National Sociologist Association (Associazione Nazionale Sociologi) founder and director of Startup magazine, editor at Wall Street International magazine, ambassador of Rebirth-Terzo Paradiso project created by Michelangelo Pistoletto.
Raffaele Quattrone’s art interest feels the effect of his education as a sociologist. As an illustrative his attention is focused on: the overlaps between the art field and the other social fields; the economization and spectacularization of the contemporary art; the globalization of culture; the relationships between the contemporary art and the democratic process; art as a space of socialization and conviviality; cultural practices for a social transformation; etc.
You can find these themes in his books Modernità e campo dell’arte. Per una sociologia critica dell’arte contemporanea italiana (Modernity and art field. Toward a critical sociology of the Italian Contemporary Art) and IN ITINERE. Arte contemporanea in trasformazione (IN ITINERE. Contemporary art in transformation) published in 2014 by Equipèco Edizioni with two important contributions: a text written by the Italian artist Michelangelo Pistoletto and a conversation with the Chinese artist Wang Qingsong.
Furthermore he has written hundreds of articles including many exhibition catalogues and interviews to International artists. For example he interviewed/wrote about: Mario Airò, Renato Barilli, Bertozzi & Casoni, Ergin Cavusoglu, Alberto Di Fabio, Stan Douglas, Nicola Formichetti, Gonkar Gyatso, Paul Gladston and Yu Youhan, Kepa Garraza, Anthony Gormley, Kimsooja, Jeff Koons, Mona Hatoum, Sabrina Mezzaqui, Nasr Moataz, Shirin Neshat, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Zimoun, etc.
In 2010 with the project Dis-orieteering: il gioco dell’identità nella società del rischio (Dis-orienteering: the identity game in the risk society) he won the third edition of the Concorso Regionale per giovani curatori e critici d’arte “A cura di…” (Italian National competition for young curators and art critics). After this recognition he has curated many art exhibitions in Italy both in institutional and non-institutional places and taken part to many conferences, lectures and public presentations.
